Are there any clinical studies to prove that loperamide is effective?

Many clinical studies have shown that loperamide is an effective anti-diarrhoeal medication. In these studies, very few adverse reactions have been reported and loperamide is considered the drug of choice in the treatment of acute diarrhoea.

In one multi-centre study, double blind, placebo controlled trial of acute diarrhoea, patients were randomised to take loperamide 4mg (2 tablets) or placebo. The occurrence of diarrhoea was recorded over the next 24 hours. In the loperamide group, 54% of patients did not pass any diarrhoea after the initial dose compared to only 17% in the placebo group.
